Sitting date:  November 26, 2005

My home here is 115 years old, and it still has many of its original features (despite being massively refurbished by me 5 years ago).  One such original feature is the floor in the living room / studio.  I don't use it often, because there still is the occasional nail head or splinter poking through.  But for the most part, it looks great.  We move to the floor from some final images.

We start with a little mirror play -- the original idea was getting two perspectives of the figure at once.  Ashton is very comfortable with her body & is very uninhibited.

I try not to be the inhibiting factor during a sitting, and Ashton got a bit bold with this particular setup.  We wound up revealing a bit more than usual here.

I think I'll display the rest of these mirror on a page in the Secret Galleries.

Okay, after playing with the mirror & standing above Ashton for some provocative images, I decide to try something different.  I'm still winging it, so I fall back on some old premises.  When working during a sitting, I remind myself to change my perspective every once in a while -- in fact, I often think to myself "up, down, close, far", just to remind me that I should move around more.  (I notice that as I get older, my camera moves around less).

So, I crawl down on the floor with Ashton, and we play with perspective.

I'm still a big fan of the extra wide angle distortion.

I don't know about you, but I always find leg positions like this to be sexy.

I get Ashton to roll around some more.  Sometimes, I play with composition.

So, I was photographing Ashton on the floor, and I can hear you guys telling me, "so, what's with the towel on the floor?  The floor is lovely, the model is lovely, but the towel doesn't add anything to the image".  So, okay.  Stop shouting.  We got rid of the towel.  See?

So, remember, when you've got nothing idea-wise, you can still do a few thing:
  • Get yourself a beautiful model who is fun to be around,

  • Craft some nice lighting -- don't forget that shadows can be your friend,

  • Move around,

  • Change perspective -- get high, get low, move close, move far away,

  • and remember:  you are doing this to have fun; if you are having fun, that's all that matters.

Time is running out.

The thing about making images from directly above, you can display them either horizontally or vertically.  Which do you prefer?

A few more images, and we are done.

Ashton is a pure joy.  She is beautiful, comfortable with herself, up for anything, flexible, and energetic.  She gets a high recommendation from me.

The bottom line for this sitting is that we had a lot of fun, so the sitting was a success.  In particular, I liked the towel tossing part of the sitting -- that was great fun.  I've got to admit that the resulting images were good, but certainly not my best.  Who cares?  We had fun.

But it goes to illustrate that my process is important for me getting my best images.  It's just me, but I've got to plan a few concepts beforehand.
