I don't get too experimental during a first sitting with a new-to-me model.  I really don't get a sense that I really know what a model looks like until I photograph her myself.  That's probably a glib way of me saying that I won't know about our chemistry until we work together.

So, I change the light a bit -- two soft boxes to either side of the model, a bit further back behind her position.  I think it's a good setup to emphasize Lauren's womanly curves.

This is one of those lighting setups that are nice for the figure but not so nice for the face.  If the model faces the camera (like I prefer), then there's a shadow down the center of her face.  So, for this lighting setup, it's best if the model is looking off to the side.  I much prefer eye contact.  When the model is not looking at the camera, I always wonder what the model is looking at.  I wonder if the model is bored or if the photographer is failing to capture the model's attention.

So, although we make a lot of fine photographs here, in retrospect, I think I need to do this kind of lighting less often.

Here's a sitting favorite.  I like how the shadows define shape & depth.

Without changing the light, Lauren & I make a few exposures with her being horizontal.  As it turns out, this is good light for some horizontal images.

I have a list of weaknesses of mine in my head, and photographing horizontal models is on the list.

I really like using soft boxes, for the softer light it provides.  Something I've noticed lately is that the light looks best if the soft box is positioned as close to the subject as possible.  That way, the light falls off quickly, which makes the light even yummier.

Somehow, when she's lying down like this, the light on her face is better than when she's standing / sitting up.

Although we made several exposures with this lighting setup, they were pretty consistent, so I only show here a few of the images.

I do feel bad -- Lauren isn't getting my best work.  Still, we are making some nice images.

This sitting concludes with Lauren & The Back Stairs
