Despite its challenges, I love making photographs inside my steam room / shower.  Typically, it's the last setup of the day, because we can ruin hair & makeup there.  However, the shower is interesting for the models, and engaging the model's brain is always a good thing.

A bonus, at least for this sitting, is that the bathroom stays really warm.  It has a stone tile floor, and the heat is under the floor.  Man, when those stone tiles heat up, it is a pure joy to walk around in bare feet.  Another advantage to under-the-floor heating is that you can set up different zones, and the bathroom is on a zone by itself.  I've got to admit that I keep that room toasty warm, especially compared to the rest of the house.

The space is cramped, and I use only a single light source, a medium small soft box off to the side.  The light bounces around the stone tiles easily, yielding a nice warm diffused light.

Natalia is sitting on a stone tile bench -- it's where I lie down when I'm using the steam room.  All that stone & cement is a heat sink, so for now, I allow Natalia to sit on a towel, but soon, once things start getting wet, we'll remove it.

After bouncing around inside the shower for a while, we turn on the water.  I've got a large capacity water heater & lots of insulation -- I keep the water hot.  Natalia gets wet.

Natalia From Warmer Climes sets the temperature just under scalding.  The water splashes around (including on the camera lens), and the steam room does what it is designed to do -- it gets steamy.

I've got to admit that I didn't notice the water drop on the lens at the time.  When using the digital camera, I use the little LCD screen to compose & review images, and the screen is too small & my eyes are too old for me to notice details like that.

Let's call it a happy accident.  It could be annoying, but I think it's okay.  It's not something that I would have chosen to do, but I don't mind it much.  It adds to the feeling of wetness.

Despite being warm in the bathroom, sitting around wet will chill anyone.  Natalia uses the shower to wet herself down again, this time with very hot water, and the steam room fills with steam.

It's an interesting & unintended effect.

I mean it got really steamy in there.  I'm less that five feet away from Natalia, & I could hardly see her.

You never know what to expect from a first sitting with a new-to-me model, but this was something special.  Natalia was beautiful, graceful, and artistic.  She was fun, and we created some very nice fine art images.  I really do hope that she'll travel back to this area again.

For the most part, these sittings are collaborations between the photographer & the model.  I know some photographers plan their sittings & shots and just place models in them.  My style is something different -- I don't try to force a square peg into a round hole.  By this I mean that I let the model express herself within some general concepts, and eventually, once I get to know the model, I devise specific setups based on the models of expression that are natural to the model.  Most of the models I work with tend to be more glamorous, and I tend to be a fine art photographer.  Natalia is a fine art photographer's dream.  She moves with grace & confidence, and she never stops moving.  I'd recommend her highly.
