Sitting done March 27, 2005

I've been looking forward to this.  We reserved a good chunk of time at the end of the sitting for some work in the shower.  Although the digital camera was unreliable earlier in this sitting, it seems to be working now, as long as I kept a finger on the top of the accessory -- it's uncomfortable, but it's working.  Working in the shower with the digital camera is ideal -- space is limited, and the digital camera's wide angle lens helps a lot.  Further, with the pivoting LCD screen, I don't have to be behind the camera in order to aim it, thereby utilizing the limited space more.  Finally, lately, I've been enjoying the distortion resulting from using the wide angle lens.

We start dry.  Although this is a relaxed pose, you can see how tight & physically fit Victoria is.

Nice light for a shower, huh?  Perhaps I should explain -- this is actually my steam room; it is adjacent to my real shower and is separated from the real shower by a glass door & a glass wall.  It is perhaps 6.5 feet long & 4.5 feet wide.  I put a soft box on a stand on the other side of the glass door, and I close the door (snaking the sync cord through).  I sit on one end of the bench & the model is on the other end -- when I use the steam room, I lie down on the bench.

No, I won't be making images with the steam in operation -- first off, the steam gets so think that you wouldn't be able to see the model, and second, moisture & electronics don't mix.

I've mentioned earlier that I like the freedom granted by the combination of the digital camera's wide angle lens and its pivoting LCD screen for composing images.  Here is a low angle exposure that just wouldn't be possible with the film camera -- there is no way to position my head behind the camera in order to compose this picture.

I usually don't photograph feet, but I'm sure that there are folks out there that enjoy seeing Victoria's sexy toes.

Despite the cramped quarters, Victoria continues to move with sultry grace.

Okay, we've snapped a few shots dry -- it's time to get Victoria wet.

I wish I knew why getting a model wet makes them sexier.

We play with the wide angle distortion with the images below.

I had thought about asking Victoria to apply some baby oil, but her wet skin provided plenty of sheen.  We did have to re-wet her every once in a while, being careful not to get the electronics too wet.  Despite the care we took, I seem to remember sitting in a puddle by the end of this setup.

When we first got Victoria wet, she pulled her hair back.  I request that she just leaves it messy.  Good choice.

Another nice thing about the digital camera is the immediate feedback -- I get to see every image immediately after it is made, and I can show Victoria selected images so that we can make adjustments to her posing.  You have to be careful not to change the pace of the sitting by looking at too many pictures, but it is helpful to glance at them & adjust.

On her own initiative, Victoria moves to the floor of the steam room (her left thigh is pointing to the glass door to the shower).  The shower head is on an extra long hose.  The steam room can get very hot -- up to 120 degrees; in order to stay in that heat, it helps to be able to splash some water on yourself to cool down.

Victoria looks to be 120 degrees all on her own.

I'll leave you with Victoria's winning smile.

Victoria is one of the most photogenic people I've ever met.  Heck, even her driver's license picture looks good!  When working with her, my "keeper" to exposure ratio goes up; hence, there are over 90 images from this sitting in the Out Takes gallery.  She's fun to be with, easy to direct, graceful in her movements, supportive of ideas & experiments, confident, and of course drop dead stunning.  She gets my highest recommendation -- if you are a photographer & have a chance to work with her, I say, go for it!

By the end of the sitting, I had almost forgot the difficulties I've been having with the digital camera.  With difficulty, I got it to work.  Makes me think:

  • I've grown dependent on the digital camera to preview & fine tune lighting & exposure.

  • I do like some of the color images -- I don't "colorize" as many images as before.

  • Its wide angle & pivoting LCD screen makes fun & unusual perspectives & distortions possible.

  • Film quality is still vastly superior for those prints I make to hang on the wall, but for this web site, all the images you see are digital, even though some of them started as film.

  • Film images require lots of time to develop, print, and scan -- digital images are already digitized.

  • When any significant piece of equipment fails to operate properly, it is highly distracting.  Being "on tilt" breaks my concentration & interferes with my ability to work during the sitting.

But overall, a terrific sitting with Victoria.  I appreciate the Victoria's trust in allowing me to handcuff her.  I had fun with the leash pictures & the impact of that subtle up-light.  I still have work to do with horizontal models, but we did some fine images.  And it's always fun to go into the shower & get a model wet.

Reminder -- there are lots of additional images from this sitting in the Out Takes Galleries.
