We've enjoyed
making the "Little
Black Dress" images on the previous page.
For those, we used the natural light coming through the
window. So, it made sense to me to use the artificial
lights for the next setup. In particular, I've been
enjoying the extra large (4' x 6') softbox, and I've found
that in the relatively tight space of the living room, it
is a challenge to position the softbox so that the model
is well lit.
Like
many of her gender, Keira enjoys shopping, and she was particularly
proud of her new black leather jacket. The leather
was soft & supple, and under the light from the softbox,
is had quite a nice sheen. So, there we go -- the
concept for the next setup. I used this setup to refine
my ability to use the softbox.

Here's a particularly
intense image.
I've
got to say that I love Keira's body. I love how defined
it is and how the shadows define the architecture of the
human anatomy.
On top
of all that, I don't know anyone who is more comfortable
being nude. Sure, for many of the more experienced
models, being nude is no big deal, but for those models,
they will tend to wear a robe between setups. For
Keira, she just prefers to be nude all the time. That's
a terrific quality in a nude model.

Now, I admit
that these images aren't exactly action-packed. On
the surface, these are "Keira standing around looking
lovely" images, but my purpose is to refine my ability
to use the extra large softbox, and I am pleased with these
results:
- Although
the light is soft & lovely, there is enough direction
to highlight Keira's defined figure well, with subtle
shadows.
- At
the same time, there is good tonal separation between
Keira & the background.
- I like
how the leather shines -- look at her right arm.
- The
exposure is good.
So, okay,
at its heart, these images aren't exciting, but to me, these
images demonstrate that I am getting better. Thus,
these images are especially appealing to me (but perhaps
not you).

I think third
sessions with a model are often my favorite. The first
session is a "get acquainted" session; the second
session is to explore some generic concepts that might work
especially good for the model. But the third sessions
are often the most fun, because...
-
If a model returns for a third session, we typically
have greater than average chemistry together,
-
We are very relaxed with each other,
-
We are developing specific concepts for our unique interests.
I think
Keira was looking especially sexy this afternoon.
And I am loving many of these images.

Keira &
I make a few exposures with her dropping the leather jacket.
It's interesting
-- this kind of image is easier to make with my old film
camera. With the film camera, there is no lag whatsoever.
With the digital camera, however, there always is lag, even
though the camera's exposure is set to "manual"
and its focus is already set. I guess there's still
some kind of internal checklist that these highly automated
cameras go through, even if there are manual setting chosen
for each.
In any case,
I got to give Keira a countdown from three, and I've got
to time hitting the shutter button based on that.
With the old (non-automatic anything) film camera, I was
quick enough to hit the shutter button as I see the movement.
No -- it
couldn't be that I'm getting older & that my reflexes
are slower. That can't happen to me, can it?
(I wish).
We also
try some "covering up" images.

For a few exposures,
we put away the extra large softbox and try a few exposures,
using a harsh light. I like "deconstructing"
images in general, and in particular, I like to figure out
how an image was lit. I'll leave it as an exercise
for you to figure out how this was lit, but as a hint, look
at the shadows created by Keira's hands, chin, and nose. |
