This
location is a very old,
semi-distressed house in Northwest
Portland. In fact, we work
on the second floor; the first
floor is a funky store selling
strange & interesting women's
clothes & accessories.
To use the space, one negotiates
with Pandora, the store proprietress.
Once
we arrive, Jessica & Yulia
spend a little time looking
through the clothing & ask
Pandora for permission to use some
for the sitting. They choose
two pieces of clothing, and we
start with this blue dress.

Jessica
& Yulia happily work with
the blue dress, and I just
don't get it. Maybe it's
a guy thing, but here we have
a beautiful, sexy, shapely,
& talented woman willing
to pose nude for us -- why the
heck are we covering up that
magnificent body? I endeavor
to wait patiently for us to
move on. |

Eventually,
Yulia changes into the second
piece of clothing, a translucent
white long skirt, which she models
topless. We work closer to
the window at the top of the
stairs with the afternoon sunlight
streaming in.

I
like these images because of
how the light works:
Yulia's right side is lit
& is positioned in front
of a wall in shadow, while
Yulia's left side is shadowed
& is positioned in front
of a lit wall. |

Beginner
models rarely know what to
do. They tend to just stand
there & wait for direction,
and it's up to the photographer to
talk a model through a specific
pose. When that happens, I
am usually disappointed -- I might
as well photograph a mannequin. More experienced
models, like Yulia, find ways to
move within the environment chosen
by the photographer. Yulia
offers us a variety of shapes
& poses. Such is Yulia's
talent that she understand any
particular setting & moves
well within it. She is full
of ideas. She has very
expressive hands.
I think I'm in
the optimal spot, because of how
the light/shadow parts of Yulia's
figure is in front of the
shadow/light parts of the wall.

One
of the advantages of working with
another photographer is that you
can get ideas from them.
Jessica is bouncing all around --
she is very focused &
energetic when working. I
must say that we are both generous
with each other, sharing ideas
& angles. I think this
particular angle, with Yulia
leaning back on the top step, was
suggested to me by Jessica.
I like it a lot.

I
admit, I just didn't understand the
appeal of the blue dress, and I didn't
make too many images with it.
But I've also got to admit that I like
some of the images made when Yulia was
wearing the long translucent white
skirt. I especially like the two
images directly above. I guess
Yulia liked the skirt, too -- she
purchased it when we were finished
with the sitting.
But
we finally get Yulia naked, and we
continue to make images until it was
time for the store downstairs to
close.
