I've
gotten to know Yulia a bit -- well enough to offer her my guest room
when she comes through town. I had mentioned to her that I
wanted to get her into my shower for some photographs. I
especially wanted to photograph her sopping wet. She suggests
that we work in there first thing in the morning before Jessica shows
up for our shared sitting, and before Yulia goes off to a morning
sitting with another photographer. This we do. |

When
I work in the shower, I'm
typically using the digital
camera exclusively, for
several reasons:
- The
film camera is just too
bulky & big -- it's
difficult to maneuver it
in the confined space.
- The
digital camera has a very
wide setting for its wide
angle lens, and that can
be a lot of fun.
- With
the pivoting LCD screen, I
can compose images from a
wide variety of angles,
some of which would be
impossible with the film
camera. In other
words, I don't have to put
my head behind the camera
in order to compose
images.

I have
to admit that I especially wanted to get Yulia into the shower because
I wanted to see what happens when her crazy curly hair gets wet.
But we wait a
little bit. We start with some dry images, then some baby oil,
then we turn on the water.
Here's a sitting
favorite -- I like the intense expression on Yulia's face. |
|
|
Yulia
has such a fit & strong
figure. I indulge in a
few torso images.
I've
noticed that I don't tend to
photograph body parts much
anymore -- nearly all of my
most recent images include the
model's face. Something
to think about. |
Clearly,
this image is with the baby oil. It's convenient to use baby oil
in the shower -- the mess is contained & easily cleaned up.
However, the shower setting is a bit constrained, because there is only one
spot where you can place the studio strobe light. We do have
choices on how to modify that single light, but there just isn't room
to move it around. I think that baby oil images tend to demand
somewhat more backlighting than this.
Yulia has an
interesting belly button -- it's kinda half innie and half outie. |

Pretty
much anytime you see a woman
nude, you are experiencing a
somewhat intimate act. I
always feel so honored & privileged
when a beautiful woman takes
off her clothes for me.
The
danger, especially for more
experienced models, is that
they can become a bit too blasé
about the whole thing.
Not so with Yulia -- there is
an intimate feel to this image
that I like. Sure, you
can look at Yulia & see a
fantastic figure, a beautiful
face, and that crazy curly
hair, but one of her most
important attributes is her
ability to focus & provide
the photographer with the gift
of her attention and with
these intimate contacts. |
By now,
we add water. I just can't position the light & the model
properly to highlight the sheen of the baby oil. Some day, I'll
bite the bullet & utilize baby oil out in the "studio"
where we can move the lights around.
Okay, while I am
dreaming, someday I'll design a shower that is better suited for
photography. |

I
do like the wide angle
distortion that is available
from my extra wide angle lens.
I
probably mentioned this in the
text from another sitting, but
I observe that many master
painters, like Matisse, would
distort human figures as they
got older. Maybe I'm
getting old! Or maybe
Yulia looks great from any
angle. |
I just
can't get Yulia wet enough. |
|
Here's another
sitting favorite
|
That
was very satisfying. Yulia is a
dream. I'm glad I got a little
time with her all to myself.
Anyway,
Yulia gets dried off & dressed
& goes off to a sitting with
another photographer, promising to rendezvous
with Jessica & I back here at my
house for another sitting.
This
sitting continues with On
Location, Semi-Clothed
