This is Betzu,
a local beauty. Although she is quite young, she has
already traveled quite a bit and has posed for some of the
best fine art photographers in the country. We've
been aware of each other for some time, but we hadn't yet
met. Since Betzu is considering a move out of the
area, we figured we better get together before she disappears. |
I think I might
have disappointed Betzu. When I talk with a model,
I like to give them a little information about what we were
going to do, just in case they want to think about it &
prepare. I had talked with Betzu about getting her
into the shower & getting her wet, and I think she was
looking forward to that.
But comes
the day, and we get a rare sunny late November day.
The shower doesn't have any windows -- all the shower shots
were artificially lit. That means, I can work in the
shower anytime. But sunny late November days are exceedingly
rare. So, at the last minute, we changed our plans.

November, 2009,
was a busy month for me; I hosted three sessions.
The first
November sitting with with
Sarah.
Sarah & I worked together explicitly because we had
some sunny November days. I really like this light.
It's unusual & dramatic.
I'm also
getting better at figuring out how to set the color balance
of these images. Hence, I think you might get to see
a few more color images this time.

Okay, more
color. But I still do like looking at the "paint
brush" and other artistic effects on a selection of
these images. I think I like them because a) I like
lots of impressionistic paintings, like Cezanne & Van
Gogh & Matisse, and b) because of my vision problem
causes inconsistent blurring (like these effects).
Based on the feedback I get from visitors, not many people
enjoy these images as much as I do, but I do enjoy them.
What do you want for nothing?
Also
-- how can someone with such a cute nose cast such a large
nose shadow?

Betzu is a
natural. She has a gorgeous face, and I really like
her bangs. She has a real, lush figure. She
is confident. She moves well. I can see why
she's so popular with so many excellent photographers. |

In late November,
the afternoon sunlight stretches along the floor -- by late
December, the light moves all the way across the room.
In the summer, the light puddles just underneath the window
(see the "Favorite
Window" page for a sampling).
One of
the things I like about working with this light at this
time of year: it often lends itself to some unusual
compositions & proportions (either wide & short,
like above or tall & narrow).
|
I've got to
admit this: when I was Betzu's age, I did not know
anyone with this kind of self-confidence.
We move
around a bit more.

One disadvantage of working with natural
light: The Sun waits for no one. If you review
the images on this page, you can see that the sun has moved.
Conversely, the advantage of artificial light is that
it can be set up & modified, and it can remain consistent
as long as the setup isn't changed.
So, here, we make one last image with the natural light,
and then we move on to setting up the strobes.
